A Line Stop is used to temporarily stop a line while maintenance or extensions are done further down the line. If the line is pressurized on both sides, you'd need a line stop on both sides of the work being preformed. This allows for limited and segmented service interruption on lines with limited shutoff capabilities.
First, a sleeve is mounted to the main with a temporary valve mounted on top. A machine is prepped to cut the hole and another is prepped for the line stop.
A cutting machine is used to cut out a hole in the pipe and then the temporary valve is closed to remove the machine and replace it with the linestop. The linestop is then ran down into the pipe to restrict flow. (See below for types of Linestops)
Once the work has been performed and we are given the go-ahead to remove our stop, we pull the stop out and restore flow. We then replace our cutting machine to set the plug for the sleeve, remove the temporary valve, and add a blind flange.
